    Holding Complexity, Cultivating Community

By Daniel Bennett, Executive Director of Hillel of Colorado

We fail our Jewish future should we forget Hillel's essential mission: enriching the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.

In times of complexity — and these are certainly complex times — it can be tempting to narrow our focus, to retreat into the safety of the familiar. But at Hillel, we believe that our strength lies in our ability to hold complexity while cultivating community.

What Does It Mean to Hold Complexity?

For our students, holding complexity means:

    • Loving Israel while grappling with difficult questions about its policies
    • Being proud Jews while navigating a campus environment that is sometimes hostile to Jewish identity
    • Honoring the traditions of their parents and grandparents while forging their own Jewish paths
    • Acknowledging pain and fear while choosing joy and celebration

At Hillel, we create space for all of these experiences. We don't ask our students to choose between their identities or their values. Instead, we help them integrate the fullness of who they are into a vibrant, authentic Jewish life.

    Cultivating Community

Community is not built in a day — it is cultivated over time, through shared experiences, honest conversations, and genuine care for one another.

This fall, our programming has reflected that commitment:

    • Friday night Shabbat dinners that bring together diverse students in celebration
    • Learning groups that tackle the hardest questions in Jewish life with curiosity and respect
    • One-on-one conversations between students and our professional staff — hundreds of coffees and meetings that build trust and connection
    • Wellness programming that supports students' mental health and emotional well-being

    Looking Ahead

As we move deeper into the academic year, I am inspired by the resilience and courage of our students. They are not shrinking from complexity — they are embracing it, and in doing so, they are becoming the Jewish leaders our community needs.

Thank you for your continued support of Hillel of Colorado. Together, we are building something extraordinary.
